The Ondo State Police Command has apprehended two men for allegedly attempting to abduct a three-year-old boy in Ogbagi Akoko, Akoko North East Local Government Area.
The Command’s spokesman, DSP Abayomi Jimoh, disclosed this in a statement on Tuesday, noting that the arrest followed a swift response to a distress report from the community.
Police said the incident occurred on March 22, 2026, after the child’s mother, identified as Mrs Olanireti, sent him to his grandmother’s residence located a short distance from her shop.
Suspicion was raised when a resident noticed unusual activity involving the child and quickly alerted others, triggering a prompt reaction from people in the area.
“The suspects were intercepted while trying to flee on a motorcycle with the child, but vigilant residents blocked their escape and ensured they were apprehended,” the statement read.
The Command added that the grandmother, alongside other residents, resisted the suspects’ attempt to escape until officers arrived and safely recovered the child.
Praising the community’s action, the Commissioner of Police said, “The timely intervention and courage displayed by residents helped prevent a serious crime.”
He also advised parents to remain cautious, stating, “We urge guardians to keep a close watch on their children and promptly report any suspicious developments to the police.”
The police assured that investigations are ongoing and reaffirmed their commitment to protecting lives and bringing offenders to justice.
