Political activities ahead of the 2027 governorship election in Lagos State are gaining momentum, with zoning discussions and possible candidates dominating conversations within the All Progressives Congress (APC).
This follows a directive by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu mandating political appointees with electoral ambitions to resign on or before March 31, a move that has intensified consultations and alignments across the state.
Within party circles, there are indications that the APC may zone its governorship ticket to the Lagos East senatorial district. This has brought several prominent figures into consideration, including former governor Akinwunmi Ambode and Senator Adetokunbo Abiru.
Other names being mentioned include Tunji Alausa, Jimi Benson, Hakeem Muri-Okunola, and former Speaker Femi Gbajabiamila.
There are also speculations that Mudashiru Obasa could feature in a broader political arrangement, possibly positioning for a Senate role from Lagos West.
Attention has also shifted to the deputy governorship slot, which may be zoned to Lagos West as part of a balancing strategy. This has triggered lobbying within the district, particularly among stakeholders in Badagry and other political blocs.
Names being considered for the deputy governorship position include Jumoke Oduwole, Ramota Hassan-Ijaiye, Jamiu Tolani Alli-Balogun, Lanre Sanusi, and Ayodele Adewale.
Others in the mix are Samuel Ajose and Abdul-Azeez Olajide Adeniran, while Prince Wale Oluwa is also gaining attention among stakeholders in the Badagry axis.
Political observers say key factors likely to influence the party’s final decision include zoning balance, religious considerations, indigenous representation, and generational interests. There are also suggestions of a power-sharing formula that could see Lagos East produce the governor, Lagos Central the deputy governor, and Lagos West the Speaker of the State House of Assembly.
As consultations continue, political alignments are expected to intensify in the coming months as aspirants position themselves for the APC ticket ahead of the 2027 election.
