President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has dismissed concerns that Nigeria is drifting toward a one-party system, insisting that a vibrant opposition is essential for democratic growth and national development.
Speaking at the All Progressives Congress (All Progressives Congress) national convention in Abuja, Tinubu said democracy functions best when there is credible competition among political actors that can challenge and refine governance decisions.
He noted that his administration remains committed to national unity and constitutional freedoms, including the right of political association. According to him, the APC does not seek to eliminate opposition parties but supports a system where diverse voices contribute to policy debate and accountability.
Tinubu also used the platform to highlight progress made under his administration’s economic reforms, stating that Nigeria is beginning to attract increased investor confidence. He pointed to improvements in the oil and gas sector, successful Eurobond issuance, and the country’s exit from the financial grey list as signs of growing global credibility.
He added that despite global economic challenges, his government remains focused on delivering on its mandate while sustaining reforms aimed at strengthening the economy and improving governance outcomes.
