Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has arrived at his Abuja residence after being granted a temporary release by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission.
It was gathered that the commission approved his release on humanitarian grounds to enable him participate in the burial rites of his mother, Hajiya Umma El-Rufai, who passed away on Friday in Cairo, Egypt, following a brief illness.
Confirming the development, his son, Bashir El-Rufai, disclosed in a post on X on Friday night that his father had regained freedom, while also expressing appreciation for the support received by the family during the period.
El-Rufai had been in the custody of the anti-graft agency since February 18 over allegations bordering on financial misconduct.
Separately, he is also being prosecuted by the Department of State Services over alleged phone surveillance claims linked to the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu.
The Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has slated April 23 for his arraignment in the matter.
Meanwhile, former Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi, paid a condolence visit to El-Rufai at his residence.
Amaechi, while speaking during the visit, faulted the manner of El-Rufai’s release, noting that it suggested the authorities were aware of the circumstances surrounding his detention.
Videos seen online showed El-Rufai’s return to his residence, as well as moments from Amaechi’s visit.
