A former Governor of Kano State, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has formally exited the New Nigeria People’s Party, pointing to the need to reposition himself within the evolving political landscape in Nigeria.
The former presidential candidate of the party in the 2023 elections made this known in a statement issued on Sunday, announcing that his resignation takes effect immediately.
Kwankwaso acknowledged that leaving the party was a tough decision, given his history and commitment, but maintained that prevailing political realities necessitated a shift in direction.
He explained that the changing nature of the country’s politics requires calculated adjustments, adding that he is seeking a platform that offers a better prospect for driving national transformation.
The ex-governor expressed appreciation to the leadership of the NNPP, particularly its National Chairman, Ajuji Ahmed, alongside members of the party’s National Working Committee for their support throughout his time in the party.
He also commended various structures within the party, including the Board of Trustees, National Executive Committee, and grassroots members, for their dedication and contributions.
Kwankwaso extended his gratitude to loyalists of the Kwankwasiyya Movement, assuring them that their shared political aspirations would continue to guide future engagements.
Although he did not officially name his next political destination, the former governor suggested that his next move would be determined by the goal of contributing more meaningfully to national development.
However, reliable sources within the African Democratic Congress and the NNPP revealed that arrangements are underway for his defection to the ADC.
According to insiders, a formal reception is expected to take place in Kano, where key figures such as David Mark and Rauf Aregbesola are likely to welcome him into the party.
There are also indications that a former Deputy Governor of Kano State, Aminu Gwarzo, may align with Kwankwaso in the anticipated political move, as permutations ahead of future elections begin to intensify.
