Students of Olabisi Onabanjo University have accused officers of the Nigeria Police Force of assaulting their leaders and opening fire on unarmed students during a confrontation at the Oru-Ijebu Police Division in Ogun State.
The allegations were made in a statement issued by the Students’ Union Government (SUG), co-signed by its president, Kehinde Bamigbose, and General Secretary, Olajire Emmanuel. According to the union, the incident began after reports that some students were arrested under unclear circumstances, prompting the SUG Legal Director to visit the station.
The union claimed that the legal director was physically assaulted, manhandled, and choked by police officers while attempting to engage them lawfully. It also alleged that another student present at the station was slapped during the encounter.
The situation reportedly escalated when student leaders, including the SUG president, arrived at the station to de-escalate tensions. The union alleged that police officers responded with force, including opening fire on unarmed students.
According to the statement, one student sustained a gunshot injury to the hand, while several others were allegedly assaulted and arrested. The union further claimed that bystanders were affected, with panic spreading due to continuous gunfire.
Describing the incident as an abuse of power, the students’ body demanded an immediate investigation, prosecution of the officers involved, compensation for victims, and the release of detained students.
However, the Ogun State Police Command has denied claims of unlawful detention, indicating that accounts of the incident remain disputed as authorities continue to assess the situation.
