The Nigerian High Commission has issued a 10-point safety advisory to Nigerians residing in South Africa following rising tensions linked to the alleged coronation of an Igbo traditional leader in the Eastern Cape Province.
The development comes after protests reportedly turned violent, with several vehicles and properties set ablaze in parts of the province. The unrest is connected to the alleged installation of Solomon Eziko as a traditional ruler of the Igbo community.
According to reports, members of ActionSA spearheaded the protests, arguing that the coronation undermines the country’s constitutional framework and provincial authority.
Violence was reported in affected areas, including KuGompo City, where demonstrators allegedly targeted properties linked to foreign nationals.
In response, the Nigerian mission released an advisory urging citizens to prioritise their safety amid what it described as growing tension.
Nigerians were advised to remain vigilant, limit movement, and avoid unnecessary interactions, especially in volatile areas. The commission also called on citizens to maintain a low profile, comply strictly with local laws, and respect host community norms.
As part of precautionary measures, Nigerians were directed to suspend socio-cultural gatherings and avoid making statements—particularly on social media—that could inflame the situation.
They were further warned to stay away from protests or counter-demonstrations and to avoid conspicuous displays of wealth.
The commission also urged citizens to promptly report any threats to life or property to relevant security agencies and to seek guidance from Nigerian diplomatic offices in Pretoria and Johannesburg when necessary.
The advisory underscores growing concerns over potential xenophobic tensions and the need for Nigerians abroad to exercise caution during periods of unrest.
