Former Minister of Information, Labaran Maku, has officially joined the Social Democratic Party (SDP) as he prepares for the 2027 general elections.
Maku, popularly called ‘Mutumin Kirki’, made the move on Tuesday, a day after quitting the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
The development follows mounting pressure from his supporters to contest the Nasarawa North senatorial seat.
He previously served as commissioner and later deputy governor of Nasarawa State between 1999 and 2007.
Political analysts say Maku’s switch to the SDP could boost the party’s influence in Nasarawa State ahead of the elections.
Supporters of the former minister hailed the decision, describing it as a tactical step toward securing a strong platform for his senatorial ambition.
His departure from the PDP was attributed to internal party disagreements and limited political opportunities.
Observers expect Maku to formally kick off his campaign soon, positioning himself as a key contender in the 2027 race.
