The NASA on Wednesday successfully launched its Artemis II mission, sending four astronauts on a historic journey around the moon in what marks a major milestone in space exploration.
The spacecraft lifted off at 6:35 p.m. Eastern Time from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida, beginning a 10-day mission that will see the crew travel approximately 600,000 miles through lunar space before returning to Earth.
Shortly after launch, the rocket’s twin solid boosters detached as scheduled, while the spacecraft entered Earth’s orbit within minutes. Solar arrays were later deployed successfully, confirming stable flight conditions.

NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman said the crew Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, Christina Koch and Jeremy Hansen were in good condition and being closely monitored.
He said, “The astronauts are safe, in high spirits, and we will continue to track their progress as the mission advances.”
The launch followed weeks of delays caused by technical issues, including a fuel system concern that required the rocket to be returned to its assembly facility for repairs before being cleared for liftoff.
Despite minor technical alerts prior to takeoff, mission controllers confirmed that all systems were in optimal condition for launch, aided by favourable weather at the launch site.
Artemis II is the first crewed lunar mission by the United States in more than five decades and represents a critical step in the country’s renewed push for deep space exploration.
Unlike previous missions, the astronauts will not land on the moon but will orbit it, testing the spacecraft’s life support systems and other critical technologies required for future lunar landings.
The mission is part of NASA’s broader Artemis programme, which aims to establish a sustained human presence on the moon and lay the groundwork for future manned missions to Mars.
During the flight, the crew is expected to conduct experiments and gather data on the effects of long-duration space travel on the human body, findings that will guide subsequent missions.
NASA officials said insights from Artemis II would be instrumental in planning Artemis III, which is expected to include a crewed moon landing later in the decade.
The latest mission builds on the success of Artemis I, an uncrewed test flight completed in 2022, as the agency intensifies efforts to return humans to the lunar surface for the first time since the Apollo era.
