The Ondo State Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps has urged motorists to evaluate their health condition before setting out on any trip as part of measures to curb road accidents.
The Sector Commander, Dr Samuel Ibitoye, made the call on Thursday during a medical outreach organised for members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers at Ilesha Garage in Akure.
He stated that the exercise, organised ahead of the Easter celebrations, was designed to ensure that drivers are medically fit to convey passengers safely.
Ibitoye explained that the programme was taken to motor parks to give drivers and transport workers easy access to basic health examinations.
He added that the initiative aligns with the agency’s mandate to reduce crashes and fatalities, noting that a driver’s physical condition is crucial to safe driving.
The commander warned that untreated health challenges could result in sudden loss of consciousness, which may lead to fatal accidents on the highway.
He disclosed that participants were tested for vital indicators such as blood pressure, body temperature, and blood sugar, stressing that abnormal results could pose serious dangers while driving.
Ibitoye further associated a recent accident around the venue with a possible medical emergency and advised drivers with health concerns to seek treatment before resuming work.
He also revealed that no fewer than 1,000 personnel had been deployed for patrol and emergency response during the festive period, while the NURTW lauded the gesture and urged its expansion beyond the state capital.
