The Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) has called on key opposition figures, including Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, and Rabiu Kwankwaso, to align with the party in a bid to strengthen democratic opposition in Nigeria.
The appeal follows the leadership crisis within the African Democratic Congress (ADC), which led the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to withdraw recognition of the party’s factions pending the resolution of ongoing legal disputes.
INEC stated that its decision was guided by a Court of Appeal ruling and announced it would refrain from engaging with any faction of the ADC until the matter before the Federal High Court is resolved.
Reacting to the development, Lagos State PRP Chairman, James Adeshina, described the crisis as a major setback for opposition unity, warning that internal divisions could weaken the ability of opposition parties to present credible alternatives ahead of the 2027 elections.
He noted that with both the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and ADC grappling with internal crises, the PRP remains a stable and ideologically consistent platform.
Adeshina urged opposition leaders to move beyond party loyalties and collaborate toward a broader national objective, emphasizing the need for unity to prevent what he described as the risk of a one-party dominant system.
He extended an invitation to prominent political figures, including Rauf Aregbesola, to join the PRP, describing it as a historically grounded party with over four decades of ideological consistency and internal stability.
According to him, the current political climate presents an opportunity for opposition leaders to consolidate their influence on a unified platform rather than remain divided across multiple parties.
Adeshina expressed optimism that a united opposition under the PRP could be competitive in the 2027 presidential election and even challenge for key positions such as the Lagos State governorship.
He concluded by urging political stakeholders to act decisively, stressing that unity among opposition forces is essential to preserving democratic balance in the country.
