A former Governor of Plateau State, Jonah Jang, has said recurring violent attacks in the state have persisted for decades, urging leaders to unite in confronting the worsening security situation.
Jang spoke on Thursday in Jos during a visit by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, following a recent attack in Anguwan Rukuba area of Jos North Local Government Area, where no fewer than 28 persons were reportedly killed.
Describing the incident as one too many, the former governor pledged to work with other political leaders to curb the rising insecurity, which he said continues to undermine peace and economic development in the state.
According to him, successive administrations in Plateau have faced similar challenges, stressing that the situation requires a collective response.
He said, “Plateau remains a state known for peace and tourism, but insecurity has persisted over the years. From past administrations to the present, the challenge has continued.”
Jang also suggested that the violence could be aimed at destabilising the political environment ahead of the 2027 general elections, adding that stakeholders must resist any attempt to undermine democratic processes.
He called on the President to convene a special meeting with leaders in the state to deliberate on lasting solutions, urging a more proactive approach to security.
Also speaking, a former governor of the state and current senator representing Plateau South, Simon Lalong, reiterated the need for unity among leaders to address the crisis.
Lalong, who recalled experiencing similar security challenges during his tenure, said collaboration among stakeholders remains key to achieving lasting peace.
He expressed optimism that joint efforts by leaders across political divides could help restore stability in the state.
The latest attack has renewed concerns over persistent violence in Plateau, with residents calling for decisive action to end the cycle of killings.
