Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, has urged Nigerians not to re-elect Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the next general election, citing the country’s worsening electricity situation.
In a statement shared on his X account, Obi recalled that Tinubu had promised during the 2023 campaign that Nigerians should deny him a second term if he failed to deliver stable power within four years. According to Obi, that promise has not been fulfilled, as power supply remains inconsistent while electricity tariffs have increased.
He noted that Nigeria’s power generation has dropped from over 4,000 megawatts in 2023 to below that level on average, despite higher costs paid by citizens. Obi also highlighted that Nigeria’s per capita electricity consumption stands at about 144 kilowatt-hours, far below the African average of 617 kWh.
Referencing a recent visit by the president to Jos, Obi claimed Tinubu cut his stay short due to a lack of electricity at the airport, describing it as a sign of how disconnected leadership has become from the everyday struggles of Nigerians.
Obi argued that the ongoing power crisis reflects broader governance challenges and called on citizens to use future elections to demand accountability, competence, and leadership that prioritises the welfare of the people.
