Ibrahim Lamido, the senator representing Sokoto East Senatorial District, has resigned from the All Progressives Congress (APC), citing worsening insecurity and economic hardship in his constituency.
The lawmaker announced his resignation in a statement shared on his official X platform, noting that the decision takes immediate effect.
Lamido explained that his exit from the party was driven by what he described as the failure to adequately protect lives and support the welfare of people in Sokoto East. He expressed concern over the increasing wave of bandit attacks in the area, which he said has led to the destruction of communities, displacement of residents, and disruption of economic activities.
He added that repeated appeals for urgent intervention had not produced meaningful results, prompting him to take a stand in line with the concerns of his constituents.
The senator maintained that his decision was not politically motivated but based on the need to respond to the current realities facing his people. He also revealed that consultations with community leaders and political associates influenced his move.
Although he did not disclose his next political destination, Lamido hinted at joining a platform that prioritises security and grassroots development.
He further called on the federal government to intensify efforts to combat banditry, warning that continued inaction could worsen the humanitarian situation in the region.
