Ex-INEC chairman Prof. Jega’s wife dies

Bayero University, Kano, has announced the passing of Hajiya Hadiza Attahiru Jega, wife of former Vice-Chancellor of the university and ex-Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Attahiru Jega.

In a statement on its official social media platform, the university said: “Inna lillahi wa inna ilaihi raji’un. We mournfully announce the death of Hajiya Hadiza Attahiru Jega, submitting fully to Allah’s will.”

The statement added that her Janazah prayer will take place immediately after Zuhr at the National Mosque, Abuja, on Sunday, April 5, 2026.

BUK prayed for Allah’s mercy on the deceased and comfort for her family. “May Allah grant her Aljannatul Firdaus and forgive her shortcomings, and may He give the family patience to endure this loss. Ameen,” it said.

Lamara Garba, Director of Public Affairs at BUK, also confirmed the death in a telephone interview with PUNCH Online. “It is true. Hajiya Hadiza Attahiru Jega has passed away and will be buried in Abuja. May Allah forgive her shortcomings,” he said.

Prof. Jega, who headed INEC during the 2015 general elections, has remained an influential figure in Nigeria’s electoral and academic circles. Condolences have poured in from friends, colleagues, and well-wishers nationwide.
