Troops of the Nigerian Army have rescued 31 civilians abducted by terrorists during an Easter church service in Ariko Village, Kachia Local Government Area of Kaduna State.
The victims were taken during an attack on an ECWA Church in the community, prompting a distress call that led to a swift military response.
In a statement issued on Sunday via its X handle, the Army said troops immediately mobilised to the area and, with the assistance of local residents, pursued the fleeing attackers.
According to the statement, the soldiers engaged the terrorists in a gun battle and subdued them with superior firepower.
“The troops, through a swift response, successfully foiled the attack and rescued 31 civilians abducted during an Easter service in Ariko Village,” the statement said.
It added that sustained pressure from the advancing troops forced the attackers to abandon the victims, including one person who sustained injuries and is currently receiving treatment.
However, the Army disclosed that five victims had already been killed by the terrorists before the arrival of the troops, noting that their remains were recovered at the scene.
The statement further indicated that the fleeing attackers likely suffered casualties, as blood trails were discovered along their escape routes.
Troops have since intensified operations in the area to track down the assailants, rescue any remaining captives, and bring those responsible to justice.
The Army also confirmed the deployment of additional personnel to strengthen security in the community and prevent further attacks.
It reiterated its commitment to safeguarding lives and maintaining the country’s territorial integrity in collaboration with other security agencies.
The military urged members of the public to continue providing timely and credible information, stressing that collective vigilance remains essential to achieving lasting peace and stability.
