A group of former governors from the South-East has unveiled a new platform aimed at fostering regional development and strengthening collaboration with incumbent administrations.
The body, named the South-East Former Governors Forum, was inaugurated in Enugu on Tuesday, with the Minister of Works, David Umahi, joining other past governors at the maiden gathering.
In a statement released by the minister’s media aide, Francis Nwaze, the forum said it is open to all ex-governors from the region, regardless of political affiliation.
Addressing journalists after the inaugural meeting, Umahi said the forum was established to provide guidance and advisory support to serving governors on developmental and national matters.
He noted that although some former governors were absent due to travel and medical commitments, a larger turnout is expected at subsequent meetings.
According to him, the forum would work closely with current governors in the zone to promote unity and address key issues affecting the region.
The minister also commended the efforts of incumbent South-East governors, describing their contributions to development as commendable.
The forum further lauded President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for ongoing infrastructure projects across the country, particularly in the South-East, as well as for appointing individuals from the region into key positions.
Umahi added that the platform would continue to expand its membership in the coming weeks as more former governors indicate interest in joining.
He said the initiative would serve as a bridge between past and present leaders, with a focus on advancing cooperation and strategic development in the South-East.
As part of activities marking the inauguration, members of the forum paid a courtesy visit to Enugu State Governor, Peter Mbah.
Dignitaries at the event included former Enugu State governor, Sullivan Chime; former Ebonyi State governor, Martin Elechi; former Abia State governor, Okezie Ikpeazu; and former Anambra State governor, Chris Ngige, among others.
