Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, alongside key opposition figures including Peter Obi, David Mark, and Rotimi Amaechi, on Wednesday led a protest to the headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Abuja.
The protest, tagged “Occupy INEC,” was organised by leaders of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to challenge what they described as partisanship by the electoral body.
Other prominent figures present included Rauf Aregbesola, Rabiu Kwankwaso, and Dino Melaye.
Speaking during the demonstration, Atiku said the protest was aimed at defending Nigeria’s democracy and resisting what he alleged to be attempts to undermine electoral fairness.
Protesters were seen chanting slogans and carrying placards with messages such as “Let democracy breathe” and “Judges must give justice,” reflecting concerns over the country’s democratic process.
The demonstration follows the recent de-recognition of ADC leadership by INEC after a court of appeal ruling, a development that has intensified the ongoing crisis within the party.
The protesters insisted that their actions were peaceful and necessary to safeguard democratic principles ahead of future elections.
