Fresh cracks have emerged within Nigeria’s opposition ranks as a faction of the African Democratic Congress under David Mark held strategic talks with a Peoples Democratic Party group led by Kabiru Turaki in Abuja on Wednesday.
The closed-door engagement is unfolding against the backdrop of deepening leadership tussles within both parties, raising concerns over stability in the opposition camp ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In a related development, top political figures mobilised supporters to the headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission in Abuja, staging a protest over alleged irregularities.
The demonstration was spearheaded by former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, alongside Rabiu Kwankwaso and Peter Obi, who led a large contingent of ADC stakeholders to press their demands.
Other notable figures at the protest included Rauf Aregbesola, Aminu Tambuwal, Dino Melaye, and David Mark.
The protesters accused INEC of showing undue preference to the ruling All Progressives Congress, alleging that the commission was taking steps capable of undermining the ADC’s chances in the next general elections.
Reacting, INEC denied the allegations, insisting that its decisions were in strict compliance with existing legal provisions.
The situation within the ADC worsened following the removal of David Mark, identified as National Chairman, and Rauf Aregbesola, listed as National Secretary, from the commission’s official records—an action that has further fuelled the leadership crisis within the party.
