A fatal mishap has marred preparations for this year’s Easter celebration in Cross River State after a theatre performer, Michael Obeten, died following a cannon explosion during a Good Friday rehearsal in Ugep, Yakurr Local Government Area.
Obeten, known for previously playing the role of Jesus Christ in the annual Passion Play, was said to be guiding younger cast members when the incident occurred.
Eyewitness accounts indicated that the accident happened at one of the rehearsal points where a locally constructed cannon, used to create sound effects, malfunctioned and discharged unexpectedly.
The device reportedly burst, sending fragments that struck the actor in the head and caused severe injuries.
In a statement issued by the 2007 Mass Communication Alumni Group of the University of Cross River and signed by Lesoda Ada, it was alleged that the equipment was operated by individuals without proper certification.
The group described the incident as avoidable, blaming lapses in safety procedures for the fatal outcome.
Obeten was immediately taken for medical attention and prepared for emergency surgery but later died from complications arising from the injuries.
The development has renewed calls for stricter safety enforcement at public performances and events involving hazardous equipment.
The alumni body urged authorities to carry out a comprehensive investigation, ensure those responsible are held accountable, and restrict the use of such devices to trained and licensed handlers.
Reacting to the incident, the spokesperson for the Cross River State Police Command, Sunday Akata, confirmed that the case had been brought to the attention of the police, though no formal report had been lodged at the Yakurr Division.
He added that preliminary information suggested the deceased was laid to rest on April 7, 2026, after passing away while receiving treatment at a hospital believed to be in Abakaliki.
