Former Sokoto State Governor, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, has accused the administration of Bola Ahmed Tinubu of steering Nigeria toward a one-party system, warning that the country’s democratic framework is under increasing threat.
Tambuwal made the remarks in Sokoto on Saturday after the state congress of the African Democratic Congress, where he addressed party stakeholders on the state of the nation and the future of opposition politics.
The former governor alleged that the ruling All Progressives Congress was deliberately weakening opposition platforms, naming the Peoples Democratic Party, Labour Party, and New Nigeria Peoples Party as victims of what he described as sustained political interference.
He warned that attempts to compel political actors to rally behind a single candidate in future elections undermine the principles of pluralism and democratic competition.
Highlighting the role of his party, Tambuwal described the ADC as a viable alternative platform gaining momentum across the country.
He said Sokoto remained central to the party’s expansion strategy, adding that ongoing mobilisation efforts would strengthen its national relevance.
He also praised party members for successfully conducting congresses at various levels, noting that the process underscored the party’s commitment to transparency and internal democracy.
Turning to national issues, Tambuwal criticised the Federal Government’s performance, citing persistent insecurity, economic hardship, and rising joblessness as evidence of governance failure.
He further cautioned Nigerians against inducements ahead of the 2027 elections, alleging that the ruling party may deploy financial incentives to sway voters.
The former governor also expressed concern over alleged attempts to stifle dissent and compromise key democratic institutions, warning that such actions could tilt the political playing field against opposition parties.
Despite the concerns, Tambuwal maintained that opposition groups would remain resolute in defending Nigeria’s multiparty democracy, expressing optimism that the ADC would emerge as a formidable force in the next electoral cycle.
