Peter Obi: I will transform the north — it’s Nigeria’s greatest asset

Peter Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, said he believes northern Nigeria is the country’s greatest economic asset and promised to prioritize its development if given the opportunity.

He made this statement during an interview on Arise TV’s Prime Time.
Obi explained that the North has vast uncultivated land and strong agricultural potential, which he believes could generate more revenue than oil if properly developed.

He also emphasized that improving agriculture, education, healthcare, and reducing poverty are key steps to addressing insecurity in the region.
He said he is willing to work with major northern political figures like Nasir el-Rufai and Rabiu Kwankwaso to achieve development goals.
On insecurity, Obi argued that it is mainly caused by poor governance, poverty, and neglect of young people, and he called for stronger, more decisive government action.
He concluded that Nigeria must urgently invest in development—especially in the North—to unlock its full economic potential.
