Paediatricians have cautioned that untreated ear infections in children could escalate into serious and potentially fatal conditions, including meningitis, if not promptly addressed.
The child health specialists explained that while ear infections are common among children, failure to manage them properly may allow the infection to spread beyond the middle ear to surrounding tissues and, in severe cases, the brain.
They warned that such progression could result in complications such as permanent hearing loss, brain infections, and even death.
Meningitis, according to medical authorities, is an inflammation of the membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord, often caused by bacterial or viral infections.
Recent health data indicate that the disease remains a major threat to child survival in Nigeria, with thousands of under-five children reportedly affected annually.
Speaking with PUNCH Healthwise, a Consultant Paediatrician, Dr Leo Odudu, stressed the importance of early medical intervention when children show symptoms of ear infection, such as persistent pain or discharge.
He noted that pus coming from a child’s ear should be treated as a warning sign requiring urgent medical attention.
“Discharge from the ear may indicate an infection that, if left untreated, can spread to the brain and lead to meningitis,” he said.
Odudu emphasised that timely diagnosis and appropriate treatment are critical in preventing the infection from advancing and causing long-term complications, including deafness and visual impairment.
He also advised parents against self-medication, urging them to seek professional medical care for proper evaluation and treatment.
“Ear infections should be handled by qualified healthcare providers who can determine the cause and prescribe the right medication,” he added.
Also speaking, a former President of the Medical and Dental Consultants Association of Nigeria, Prof Aminu Mohammad, warned that ignoring symptoms such as ear discharge could have grave consequences.
He noted that prolonged infections could damage the inner ear, leading to hearing impairment, severe pain, and balance issues.
“In extreme situations, the infection may spread to the brain, resulting in sepsis or death,” he cautioned.
The experts urged parents and caregivers to remain vigilant and seek immediate medical attention at the onset of symptoms to prevent avoidable complications.
