The Supreme Court of Nigeria has scheduled April 22 to hear appeals filed by a faction of the Peoples Democratic Party led by Kabiru Turaki.
The faction is challenging the earlier nullification of the party’s national convention held in Ibadan.
A five-member panel of the court, headed by Mohammed Garba, approved an accelerated hearing of the case following a request by the appellants.
The application, filed by the PDP’s National Working Committee (NWC) and National Executive Committee (NEC), sought urgent consideration due to time-sensitive electoral activities.
Counsel to the appellants, Chris Uche (SAN), argued that the matter required speedy resolution, especially as the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has set April 23 as the deadline for political parties to begin submitting candidates.
Lawyers representing the opposing faction aligned with Nyesom Wike did not object to the request but asked for time to respond. INEC’s legal team also requested time to file their submissions.
In its ruling, the court directed all parties to exchange legal documents before April 21, with respondents given five days to file their briefs and appellants allowed two days to reply.
