Proceedings in a defamation suit filed by former Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, against human rights activist Omoyele Sowore and SaharaReporters were stalled on Tuesday after the FCT High Court failed to sit.
The case, which is being heard at the court’s Life Camp division in Abuja, could not proceed due to the absence of the presiding judge, reportedly linked to ongoing renovation of the court facility.
Egbetokun, alongside his son Victor and a police officer, Bukola Kuti, had instituted the suit over alleged defamatory publications by SaharaReporters.
When Sowore and his legal team arrived for the scheduled hearing of the motion on notice, they were informed that the court would not be sitting. A new date for the hearing is expected to be communicated.
Earlier, the plaintiffs had secured interim injunctions restraining Sowore and SaharaReporters from further publishing or commenting on the alleged defamatory matters, pending the determination of the case.
The dispute stems from investigative reports alleging that Victor Egbetokun received ₦100 million from a security vote account linked to Anambra State—claims that have since become central to the ongoing legal battle.
The matter has now been adjourned, awaiting a fresh hearing date.
