Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has pledged to introduce a constitutional amendment to establish rotational presidency if elected in 2027.
Speaking during an interview on Arise Television, Atiku said formalising power rotation in the constitution would promote fairness, stability, and inclusiveness in Nigeria’s political system.
He noted that while the principle of zoning already exists in the Peoples Democratic Party, embedding it in the national constitution would ensure broader and more consistent application across all political parties.
Atiku also addressed the historical distribution of presidential power between the northern and southern regions, stating that the South has held the presidency for a longer period compared to the North.
Reflecting on past constitutional debates, he revealed that he had previously opposed a similar proposal by the late Alex Ekwueme, who advocated for rotational presidency.
According to Atiku, that decision was a mistake in hindsight, as such an arrangement could have ensured more balanced representation across Nigeria’s regions.
He emphasized that constitutionalising rotational presidency remains one of the most effective ways to strengthen unity and equity in the country’s governance.
