A former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, has said the ruling All Progressives Congress would be defeated if the 2027 general elections are conducted in a free and fair manner.
Lawal, a chieftain of the African Democratic Congress, made the assertion on Wednesday during an appearance on Politics Today, a programme on Channels Television.
He alleged that the current administration was working towards establishing a one-party system, insisting that a transparent electoral process would expose its lack of popularity.
“They want a one-party system. It is clear that this government cannot afford a free and fair election because they will lose,” he said.
When asked to provide evidence to support his claim, Lawal said the party had data but declined to disclose details, describing it as internal information.
His remarks come amid a dispute between the ADC and the Independent National Electoral Commission over the commission’s decision to suspend recognition of the party’s leadership led by David Mark, pending the outcome of a court case.
INEC had also indicated that it would not monitor the party’s congresses and convention. However, the ADC went ahead with its activities, culminating in its national convention, which Lawal described as successful.
Defending the party’s action, he said the ADC relied on legal advice and dismissed INEC’s position.
“We are not bound by INEC’s opinion. It is not a court of law. We will be on the ballot and participate in the election regardless,” he stated.
Lawal added that while the party has policy proposals to address Nigeria’s challenges, its immediate focus is to unseat the current administration.
