Former Ondo State Governor, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko, has resigned his membership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), ending years of speculation about his political status.
The resignation letter, dated April 10, 2026, was addressed to the PDP Chairman of Ward 7 in Ondo West Local Government Area.
In the letter, personally signed by him, Mimiko said the decision took effect from April 10 and was based on what he described as “strictly personal reasons.”
He noted that he had been largely inactive in party affairs in recent times, adding that the period of disengagement allowed him to reflect and consult widely before arriving at the decision.
Mimiko stated that he remained committed to Nigeria’s democratic process and the country’s overall development, stressing that he would continue to engage with like-minded individuals in pursuit of those ideals.
He added that his exit from the party was not borne out of bitterness, and wished the PDP success in its future endeavours.
According to him, recent speculations about his political affiliation made it necessary to formally clarify his position.
Observers say Mimiko’s resignation may not come as a surprise, given his prolonged absence from active party politics in the state.
In recent years, several of his loyalists had reportedly left the PDP and aligned with the ruling All Progressives Congress, including figures who supported Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa’s election.
A close associate of the former governor, Eni Akinsola, confirmed receipt of the resignation letter, describing it as genuine but declining further comment.
