United States President Donald Trump on Friday said he turned down an offer from the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation to assist in securing the Strait of Hormuz, following claims that the waterway had been reopened by Iran.
Trump disclosed this in a post on his Truth Social platform, where he dismissed the alliance’s proposed involvement.
“Now that the Hormuz Strait situation is over, I received a call from NATO asking if we would need some help,” he said.
“I told them to stay away, unless they just want to load up their ships with oil.”
The former president criticised the alliance, accusing it of failing to act when needed.
“They were useless when needed, a paper tiger!” he added.
The Strait of Hormuz remains a strategic global shipping route, with tensions in the region often raising concerns over international oil supply and security.
