President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has criticised opposition politicians, accusing them of undermining democratic principles despite publicly claiming to support them.
Tinubu made the remarks while receiving a delegation of political leaders from Enugu State, led by Peter Mbah, at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
Addressing the delegation, the president expressed confidence in the resilience of Nigeria’s democracy, urging leaders to remain focused despite political pressure and criticism.
“Democracy will survive despite intimidation.
When you are making progress and others are unhappy, stay focused and ignore distractions,” Tinubu said.
He also took aim at past administrations, particularly over challenges in the power sector, blaming previous policies for ongoing electricity issues while reaffirming his government’s commitment to reform.
According to him, long-term national development has been hindered by short-term planning, stressing the need for sustainable economic strategies.
Tinubu further highlighted Nigeria’s economic potential, noting that the country continues to play a leading role in Africa’s growth despite existing challenges.
The president emphasised that national progress requires collective effort across all levels of government and called for stronger contributions, especially at the local level.
Meanwhile, Governor Peter Mbah reportedly pledged support for Tinubu’s re-election bid in 2027. In response, the president expressed optimism about Nigeria’s future, insisting that the vision of a prosperous nation is achievable through unity and sustained effort.
Tinubu also dismissed political pressure ahead of the next election cycle, stating that he remains committed to governance and national development regardless of opposition criticism.
