Hundreds of youths on Tuesday staged a peaceful protest at the Sokoto office of the Independent National Electoral Commission, calling for reforms to strengthen Nigeria’s electoral system ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The demonstrators, drawn from a coalition of political parties and civil society groups, converged on the commission’s office within the Sokoto metropolis, displaying placards and chanting slogans in support of electoral transparency and accountability.
The protest, which was orderly and monitored by security personnel, focused on the need to build public confidence in the electoral process and safeguard democratic institutions.
Addressing the protesters, a member of the Sokoto State House of Assembly representing Sokoto North I Constituency, Yarima, said the demonstration was aimed at encouraging continuous improvement in the nation’s democratic framework.
He stressed that credible elections remain central to sustaining democracy and urged relevant authorities to uphold the integrity of the electoral system.
Also speaking, a former Commissioner for Information in the state, Akibu Dalhatu, described the protest as a civic engagement initiative intended to promote dialogue on electoral reforms.
He emphasised the need for collaboration among stakeholders to ensure inclusive participation and strengthen democratic practices.
The protesters carried banners with messages such as “Protect Nigeria’s Democracy,” “INEC Must Remain Neutral,” and “No to One-Party State,” as they marched peacefully.
Leaders of the coalition said the protest was part of ongoing advocacy efforts to mobilise citizens and key stakeholders towards improving the electoral process.
They expressed optimism that sustained engagement would lead to meaningful reforms before the next general elections.
Organisers also urged participants to remain law-abiding throughout the exercise, reiterating their commitment to peaceful advocacy.
The protest underscores growing calls for reforms as preparations gradually build towards Nigeria’s next electoral cycle.
