The Federal Government, in partnership with the Christian Association of Nigeria, on Saturday inaugurated the construction of a N25bn ecumenical chapel and pilgrimage centre at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport.
The project, part of activities marking CAN’s 50th anniversary, is aimed at providing a dedicated space for prayer and reflection for travellers, pilgrims and airport personnel.
Speaking during the groundbreaking ceremony in Abuja, CAN President, Daniel Okoh, said the facility would serve as a spiritual haven for passengers seeking calm before or after travel.
He noted that the initiative underscores the importance of addressing the emotional and spiritual needs of travellers alongside physical infrastructure.
Also speaking, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, described the project as a blend of faith and development, adding that it aligns with the Federal Government’s efforts to improve passenger experience at airports.
Akume, who performed the groundbreaking, said the scale of investment reflects the significance attached to the project.
The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, said the initiative also reflects religious balance, noting that provision had earlier been made for a mosque at the airport.
He disclosed that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu approved the allocation of land for the project.
According to former SGF, Boss Mustapha, the complex will feature a 450-seat chapel, a 150-capacity multipurpose hall, a guest house and a tower.
The project, expected to be completed by October 2026, is being executed in collaboration with relevant agencies, including the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria.
Officials said the facility would offer travellers a serene environment for prayer and reflection within the busy airport setting.
