Operatives of the Nigeria Police Force have arrested a 62-year-old man, Mamuda Hassan, for allegedly circulating counterfeit currency in Nasarawa State.
The suspect, said to be a resident of Zaria in Kaduna State, was apprehended by officers of the State Criminal Investigation Department in Lafia following credible intelligence.
According to the police, Hassan was arrested at a cattle market in Lafia where he was allegedly transacting with fake N1,000 notes.
Preliminary investigations indicated that the suspect confessed to obtaining the counterfeit currency from an accomplice based in Mararaba Akunza area of Lafia, who is currently at large.
The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, SP Ramhan Nansel, confirmed the arrest on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, Shetima Jauro Mohammed, noting that efforts were ongoing to apprehend other members of the syndicate.
He urged members of the public, particularly traders, transport operators and POS agents, to remain vigilant during transactions and watch out for signs of fake currency, including poor print quality and irregular security features.
The command also advised residents to promptly report suspicious activities to the nearest police station.
The suspect is expected to be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations, the police added.
