The Inspector-General of Police, Rilwan Olutunji Disu, has directed the dismissal and prosecution of officers involved in the fatal shooting of a civilian, Mene Ogidi, in Effurun, Delta State.
Disu gave the directive on Wednesday during a press briefing at the Force Headquarters in Abuja, where he condemned the incident, describing it as criminal and unprofessional.
He said the conduct of the officers fell short of the standards of the Nigeria Police Force.
“The officer at the centre of the incident, ASP Nuhu Usman, acted in clear breach of established procedures and Force Order 247 on the use of firearms,” the IGP said.
He noted that the officer’s actions were unacceptable and inconsistent with the values of the force.
According to him, all officers linked to the incident were immediately transferred from the Delta State Command to the Force Headquarters for disciplinary proceedings.
He added that the Force Disciplinary Committee and the Orderly Room Tribunal investigated the matter and confirmed violations of operational guidelines.
The IGP disclosed that both panels recommended the dismissal of the implicated officers, including Usman, alongside their prosecution for unlawful homicide.
He said the recommendations had been forwarded to the Police Service Commission for final approval.
Upon dismissal, the officers will be handed over to relevant authorities for prosecution, he added.
Disu stressed that the actions of the officers were individual misconduct and did not reflect the institutional values of the police.
He reiterated that the force would not tolerate abuse of power, noting that wearing the uniform does not justify unlawful actions.
The IGP extended condolences to the family of the deceased and assured them that justice would be pursued.
He also appealed for calm, urging members of the public to avoid taking the law into their own hands.
He reaffirmed the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force to accountability and reforms, stressing that no individual is above the law.
