Alleged same-sex relationship triggers tension in Enugu

Tension gripped parts of Enugu State following allegations of an attempted mob attack on some individuals over claims of same-sex relationships.

Sources within the affected communities said the unrest began after rumours circulated accusing certain residents of engaging in same-sex activities.

Eyewitnesses disclosed that a group of youths mobilised in reaction to the allegations, sparking fears of possible mob violence.

It was gathered that the individuals at the centre of the claims fled the area before any attack could be carried out. Their identities and the veracity of the allegations could not be confirmed as of the time of filing this report.

Efforts to obtain comments from community leaders were ongoing, while no official statement had been issued on the incident. Attempts to reach the police for confirmation also proved unsuccessful as of press time.

Observers have repeatedly warned against mob justice, noting that such actions are often triggered by unverified claims and heightened emotions.

Legal practitioners, on their part, have stressed that resorting to jungle justice undermines the rule of law, insisting that allegations should be handled through lawful channels rather than by self-help.
