Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, has assured Nigerian workers of the National Assembly’s commitment to enacting laws aimed at improving their welfare and living conditions.
Akpabio gave the assurance in a message to commemorate International Workers’ Day, which was personally signed and released on Friday through his media aide.
He congratulated workers across the country, commending their resilience, dedication and patriotism despite prevailing economic and workplace challenges.
The Senate President described Nigerian workers as the driving force of the nation’s economy, acknowledging their contributions across key sectors.
He noted that teachers, healthcare professionals, farmers, artisans, civil servants, security personnel and private sector employees all play vital roles in sustaining national development.
Akpabio, however, acknowledged the hardships faced by workers, including rising living costs and increasing workplace demands, assuring that the legislature remains focused on addressing these issues.
According to him, the 10th National Assembly is committed to promoting policies that support a living wage, safer working conditions, pension reforms and job creation.
He added that recent legislative actions, including the new National Minimum Wage framework and welfare initiatives, reflect ongoing efforts to improve workers’ wellbeing.
The Senate President also urged employers in both the public and private sectors to prioritise the welfare of their workforce, stressing that productivity is closely tied to workers’ motivation and satisfaction.
He commended labour unions for their continued engagement and cooperation, pledging sustained collaboration in advancing the interests of Nigerian workers.
Akpabio reaffirmed the Senate’s resolve to pursue reforms that would ensure workers enjoy dignity, security and improved economic prospects.
