The Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Phrank Shaibu, has debunked reports suggesting that his principal is planning to defect to the Nigerian Democratic Congress.
Shaibu, in a statement issued on Monday, described the claims as false and misleading, insisting that no discussions or arrangements had been made regarding any defection.
He said speculations about alleged secret meetings with party officials were unfounded and aimed at diverting public attention from pressing national challenges.
“There is no defection, no secret talks, and no hidden meetings. These claims are nothing but recycled falsehoods,” he said.
The aide maintained that Atiku remains firmly committed to the African Democratic Congress, stressing that the former presidential candidate is focused on the party’s agenda.
According to him, Atiku’s political direction remains unchanged, adding that he is dedicated to efforts aimed at addressing the country’s socio-economic and security concerns.
Shaibu also criticised what he described as attempts to mislead the public through unverified reports, noting that Nigerians are increasingly discerning.
The clarification comes amid ongoing political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections, including the recent defection of former presidential candidate Peter Obi to the NDC.
Observers say the denial may help calm speculation surrounding Atiku’s next political move as parties continue consultations and coalition talks.
