The Lagos State Safety Commission has shut down several malls, hotels, and residential buildings across Lagos for failing to comply with elevator safety regulations.
The enforcement exercise affected over 12 properties located in high-profile areas such as Lekki Phase 1 and Ikeja.
According to officials, the affected buildings did not register their lift systems for mandatory government inspection and safety certification, despite receiving multiple warnings.
Speaking during the operation, a representative of the commission explained that elevator registration is essential to ensure regular maintenance and prevent dangerous accidents.
Authorities emphasized that poorly maintained lifts pose serious risks, including the possibility of fatal incidents.
Some of the sealed properties include commercial and residential buildings on Admiralty Way and Awolowo Road, among others.
The commission warned that the crackdown will continue as part of a zero-tolerance approach to safety violations. Building owners and facility managers have been urged to comply immediately with safety regulations to avoid further sanctions.
