Senator Rufai Hanga, who represents Kano Central, has officially left the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) for the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), leaving the NNPP without any representation in the Senate.
His defection was announced during Tuesday’s plenary after Senate President Godswill Akpabio read his formal letter to lawmakers.
In the letter, Hanga cited ongoing internal conflicts within the NNPP as the reason for his departure. He explained that unresolved factional disagreements and competing leadership interests within the party had made it difficult for him to function effectively as a legislator.
He added that his decision was not taken alone, stating that it followed wide consultations with his constituents and key political stakeholders who advised him on the need for a more stable political platform.
Hanga further noted that his move to the NDC was based on alignment with the party’s ideology and governance direction, which he believes better reflects his political goals.
Following the defection, the NNPP now holds no seat in the Senate. The current Senate composition now stands as APC with 89 seats, ADC with 7, PDP with 4, NDC with 3, APGA with 1, Accord with 1, and Labour Party with 1.
