The Lagos State Government has shut down several estates and properties in Lekki, Ajah, and Surulere over alleged illegal discharge of untreated sewage into public drainage systems and canals.
The enforcement was carried out by the Lagos State Wastewater Management Office (LSWMO), which sealed the affected properties for violating environmental regulations.
One of the major estates affected was Pinnock Beach Estate in Osapa London, Lekki, which authorities accused of pumping untreated sewage directly into a nearby canal. The government said the action had caused environmental pollution, foul odour, and health risks to residents and surrounding communities.
The Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, said the estate had ignored several warnings and abatement notices before enforcement action was taken.
Other properties sealed include residential buildings in Surulere, Ajah, and Elegushi areas, which were also accused of discharging raw sewage into public drains and waterways.
According to the government, the violations led to blocked drainage systems, environmental degradation, and potential threats to public health and aquatic life.
Authorities warned that estate developers and property managers must comply with wastewater and environmental laws or risk further sanctions and prosecution.
The Lagos State Government reiterated its commitment to enforcing environmental standards and protecting public health across the state.
