A coalition of supporters under the banner Coalition for Jonathan 2027 has called on former Nigerian president Goodluck Jonathan to contest the 2027 presidential election, citing growing concerns over the country’s political and economic situation.
Speaking during a march to Jonathan’s office in Abuja, the group’s National President, Tom Ohikere, said the appeal was driven by fears that Nigeria could face deeper instability if urgent action is not taken.
According to Ohikere, the coalition had earlier visited Jonathan on April 8, 2026, to persuade him to join the race but had yet to receive a definite response from the former president.
The group urged Jonathan to obtain a presidential nomination form from any political party of his choice and promised to mobilise nationwide support for his candidacy.
Ohikere said the supporters gathered in Abuja represented different ethnic, religious, and social groups across Nigeria, all united in their call for Jonathan to return to active politics.
Responding to the appeal, Jonathan reportedly said he would “consult widely” before making any decision on a possible presidential bid.
The former president noted that contesting for the presidency is a serious undertaking and stressed the importance of preparing younger generations for the future of the country.
