A chieftain of the Labour Party in Ebonyi State, Dr Emmanuel Ezeh, has dismissed reports of an alleged zoning crisis within the party ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Ezeh, a former National Assembly candidate of the party, described the speculation as politically motivated and an attempt to introduce “old political traditions” into what he called a progressive political movement.
Speaking with journalists in Abakaliki on Monday, Ezeh argued that zoning arrangements have failed to strengthen democratic governance in Nigeria, insisting that Nigerians now prefer issue-based politics and competent leadership capable of delivering democratic dividends.
He maintained that the Labour Party was built on the principles of inclusiveness, accountability and merit, warning that efforts to reduce internal political discussions to zoning debates could weaken the party’s ideological foundation.
The LP stalwart also hinted at a possible political ambition ahead of the 2027 elections, revealing that consultations with stakeholders and supporters across various political blocs are ongoing.
However, he stressed that any decision concerning his political future would be based on ideology, principle and national interest rather than personal ambition.
“I am still studying the political terrain. My decisions are guided by principle, not ambition,” Ezeh said.
Ezeh reaffirmed his loyalty to the Labour Party, noting that his continued membership of the party is driven by its commitment to equal opportunity, social justice, integrity and competent leadership.
According to him, leadership positions should be determined by merit, competence and vision instead of sectional or ethnic considerations.
He added that increasing calls from supporters and interest groups reflect the desire of many Nigerians, especially youths, for a new political culture rooted in transparency, equity and responsible leadership.
Ezeh further reiterated his commitment to democratic values, good governance and people-oriented policies aimed at improving citizens’ welfare regardless of political affiliation.
