Mohammed Bello El-Rufai has accused the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) of denying his father, former Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai, access to medical care and family visits while in detention.
In a statement released on Friday, Bello alleged that ICPC officials prevented El-Rufai’s personal doctor from seeing him at the detention facility, despite what he described as a court order granting unrestricted access to his medical team. He said the doctor arrived around 3pm to review test results but was refused entry unless he obtained written approval from the ICPC chairman.
He further claimed that El-Rufai’s wife was also blocked from delivering food to him in the evening, allegedly due to an internal rule restricting deliveries after 6:30pm.
Bello described the actions as a violation of court orders and a breach of his father’s constitutional rights, arguing that no lawful detention should restrict medical access or family support.
According to him, the family considers the restrictions arbitrary and an abuse of administrative procedures. He also called for full respect of El-Rufai’s legal and human rights while in custody.
El-Rufai has reportedly been in ICPC custody since February 19 over allegations relating to financial misconduct during his tenure as governor of Kaduna State between 2015 and 2023.
