The Nigerian Medical Association has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to order a public inquiry into the recent raid carried out by operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission at the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital.
According to the association, the incident caused panic among patients, workers and visitors after EFCC officials stormed the hospital premises and arrested Professor Eyo Ekpe, a cardiothoracic surgeon and deputy chairman of the hospital’s medical advisory committee.
In a statement signed by the NMA’s National Publicity Secretary, Olayinka Atilola, the association urged President Tinubu to direct EFCC Chairman Ola Olukoyede to investigate the operation and sanction any officers found guilty of misconduct.
The association described the raid as a “violent disruption” of the hospital environment and demanded compensation for affected medical personnel. It also warned that repeated harassment of healthcare workers could worsen the growing migration of Nigerian doctors abroad.
The NMA further called on federal and state governments to enact laws protecting hospitals from violence and to ensure complaints involving medical negligence are handled through appropriate regulatory bodies rather than security agencies.
Meanwhile, the EFCC said it had already ordered an investigation into the incident, although the commission claimed it had not yet seen evidence of physical assault or injury during the operation.
