Senator Kaila Dahuwa Samaila, representing Bauchi North, has officially defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC). The defection was announced through a letter addressed to Senate President Godswill Akpabio, which was read during Senate plenary on Tuesday.
This move further consolidates the APC’s majority in the Senate. With this recent development, the current Senate composition is as follows: APC – 74 members; PDP – 27 members; Labour Party (LP) – 4 members; All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) – 2 members; New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) – 1 member; and Social Democratic Party (SDP) – 1 member.
Senator Samaila attributed his defection to ongoing internal crises within the PDP that he felt severely hindered his ability to serve his constituents effectively.
He stated, “The Peoples Democratic Party has gravely constrained my ability to discharge my constitutional responsibilities effectively and in good conscience.”
Therefore, expressing a strong commitment to national service and the welfare of his constituency, he emphasized the need to realign with a more progressive political platform that promotes good governance, unity, progress, growth, and discipline. His decision to join the ruling APC was also inspired by his admiration for President Bola Tinubu’s bold and transformative reforms aimed at restoring economic stability and strengthening governance.
Furthermore, he expressed confidence that President Tinubu’s leadership is the decisive direction Nigeria needs to achieve sustainable growth. Additionally, Senator Samaila commended Senate President Godswill Akpabio for his exemplary leadership of the 10th Senate. He concluded by pledging his loyalty to the APC and reaffirming his dedication to national unity and development.
