A member of the Lagos State House of Assembly representing Surulere I Constituency, Desmond Elliot, has denied allegations linking him to the impeachment of Speaker Mudashiru Obasa in 2025.
Elliot, who spoke during an interview on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily on Tuesday, said he neither initiated nor masterminded the controversial move against the Speaker.
The lawmaker explained that he was outside the country when the impeachment process took place and only appended his signature to the document after returning to discover that most lawmakers had already endorsed it.
“It was a topic that was already dead and buried. The House has moved on and Right Honourable Mudashiru Obasa continued as Speaker,” he said.
Elliot stated that he merely signed the document after being informed that the action had the backing of party leaders.
According to him, President Bola Tinubu later clarified that he neither approved nor had prior knowledge of the impeachment plot.
The actor-turned-politician’s reaction followed recent remarks by Femi Gbajabiamila, who allegedly suggested during an APC stakeholders’ meeting in Lagos that Elliot was among those behind the move against Obasa.
Gbajabiamila reportedly said Elliot’s alleged involvement in the crisis almost cost him his political position within the ruling All Progressives Congress.
