Former Kogi West senator and chieftain of the African Democratic Congress, Dino Melaye, has congratulated former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar on his victory at the party’s presidential primary, likening the achievement to Arsenal’s recent English Premier League title success.
Atiku emerged winner of the ADC presidential primary held on Wednesday night after polling 1,846,370 votes to defeat former Rivers State governor, Rotimi Amaechi, and ex-banker Mohammed Hayatu-Deen.
Amaechi secured 504,117 votes, while Hayatu-Deen polled 177,120 votes.
Reacting to the outcome in a post shared on X on Thursday, Melaye, who is known to be an Arsenal supporter alongside Atiku, wrote: “Oga, you did it like Arsenal.”
The comment referenced Arsenal’s recent Premier League triumph, their first league title in 22 years after Manchester City dropped points against Bournemouth.
Atiku’s victory means the former vice-president will be making another attempt at Nigeria’s presidency in the 2027 general election.
However, the primary election has continued to generate controversy, as both Amaechi and Hayatu-Deen rejected the results, alleging irregularities, voter disenfranchisement, and manipulation during the exercise.
Despite the complaints, the ADC leadership has maintained that the primary was conducted in line with party guidelines.
