The Federal High Court has announced that its registries nationwide will now operate on weekends and public holidays for the filing of pre-election matters ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The directive was contained in a notice issued on Thursday and signed by the Chief Registrar of the court, Yahaya Shafa.
According to the notice, the decision was taken to address the strict constitutional and statutory timelines guiding the filing and determination of pre-election disputes.
The court stated that the special arrangement would apply only to matters relating to pre-election cases.
“The Federal High Court of Nigeria formally notifies all legal practitioners that registries in all divisions of the Federal High Court would be open between 10:00am and 2:00pm at weekends and public holidays for filing of pre-election matters only,” the statement read.
The court explained that the move became necessary to ensure compliance with the limited timeframe provided by law for handling election-related litigation.
“This has become expedient to meet the limited time frame for filing pre-election matters,” the notice added.
The development comes amid increased political activities and party primaries ahead of the 2027 general elections.
