The participation of prominent political figures, including Seyi Tinubu and Dapo Abiodun, at the annual Ojude Oba Festival has generated mixed reactions among Nigerians.
The colourful cultural event, held in Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State, attracted government officials, traditional leaders, and political stakeholders who gathered to celebrate the rich heritage of the Ijebu people.
However, some critics have argued that the festivities came at a time when many Nigerians are facing security and economic challenges. Concerns raised by commentators focused on the contrast between the celebratory atmosphere at the festival and ongoing reports of kidnappings, insecurity, and rising living costs across parts of the country.
Among those expressing concern is journalist Gloria Drealomalicha, who argued that public officials should demonstrate greater sensitivity to the hardships faced by citizens. She contended that many Nigerians are worried about insecurity, inflation, and economic difficulties, and expect stronger government engagement with these issues.
Supporters of the festival, however, maintain that cultural celebrations remain an important part of Nigeria’s identity and should not be suspended because of national challenges. They argue that governance and cultural activities can coexist.
The debate reflects broader public discussions about leadership, governance, security, and economic conditions as the country approaches future political contests.
The Federal Government has repeatedly stated that it is implementing reforms aimed at improving the economy and addressing security concerns nationwide.
