The Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum and Governor of Kwara State, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, has appealed to President Bola Tinubu to consider increasing the national minimum wage to N100,000.
AbdulRazaq made the appeal on Friday during a Sallah homage paid to the President at his Lagos residence by members of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, led by Vice President Kashim Shettima.
The governor said the proposal had become necessary in view of the wage realities in several states, noting that many subnational governments were already paying salaries close to the suggested amount.
He urged the Federal Government to initiate consultations on the possibility of reviewing the current minimum wage benchmark upward.
Speaking during the visit, AbdulRazaq said, “On the issue of the minimum wage, most states are already paying close to N100,000. I appeal to Your Excellency that we begin discussions on moving the minimum wage to N100,000.”
He expressed optimism that state governments would receive the support of the Federal Government if a new wage structure is adopted.
“We know we will continue to enjoy your support as we move towards implementing such a policy,” he added.
The call comes amid growing concerns over the rising cost of living and increasing pressure on governments at all levels to improve workers’ welfare.
The current national minimum wage was approved following negotiations between the Federal Government, organised labour and other stakeholders, but demands for a fresh review have continued as economic realities evolve.
